Expanding Breakfast Grants

Available in 2012

An Expanded Breakfast program is a key component to creating a healthy school environment. Expanding your breakfast program is a great way to implement your Fuel Up to Play 60 Healthy Eating Strategy.

Schools with grant applications best meeting the criteria for implementing alternative breakfast serving methods or enhancing current alternative breakfast serving methods will each receive up to $3000!  To apply:

  • Include a copy of your current breakfast menu

  • Submit application and breakfast menu by Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Studies document that children receive numerous benefits from eating nutrient-rich breakfasts:

  • Better student test scores and school attendance

  • Increased ability to concentrate and decreased disciplinary problems

  • Higher intakes of calcium, protein, dietary fiber, and folic acid

Idaho schools recognize this opportunity and many offer breakfast in the cafeteria.  But there’s an even better way to bring breakfast to children – using alternate breakfast service methods. Offering breakfast beyond the cafeteria setting increases participation by providing service for children who arrive late or who prefer to socialize rather than eat.  It also helps to remove the potential social stigma that breakfast programs are meant for low-income students.
